Editor’s note: In mid-January, FPL President and C.E.O. Eric Silagy announced plans to seek approval from the Florida Public Service Commission for a $1.337 billion rate increase over the next several years. Silage’s announcement has yet to be reported by TCPalm.com and the Press Journal. This week, FPL formally filed its rate-hike request with the PSC. It will be interesting to see how long the Press Journal, whose publisher is married to an FPL vice president, will continue to ignore a story of relevance to so many of its readers.

Florida Power & Light Co. filed a request for a $1.337 billion four-year base rate increase Tuesday, which if approved by the Florida Public Service Commission, would begin in phases starting in 2017.
The typical 1,000 kilowatt-hour residential customer bill would increase $13.28 a month with three adjustments over the four years. The base rates for that typical bill would increase almost 24 percent from $57 in April 2016 to $65.60 in 2017, $68.20 in 2018 and $70.28 in 2019, with no change in 2020. Continue reading…
