The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVBIRC) has announced that 12 dogs recently rescued from an alleged Arkansas puppy mill and transported to Vero Beach are now available for adoption. The dogs include miniature pinscher, beagle, Maltese, poodle, terrier, and shih-tzu mixes.

In early March, nearly 300 dogs were seized by local law enforcement in Madison County, Arkansas after The Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) received a tip that the animals were living in filthy conditions without access to fresh food and water. Shelters from across the U.S., including HSVBIRC, offered to place the dogs for adoption.

“We are looking forward to helping these 12 dogs find forever homes. Each and every one needs the compassion and care that only loving adopters can provide,” said Maria Ramirez, Director of Operations for the shelter. According to Ramirez, the dogs will receive veterinary care and be vaccinated, dewormed, spayed or neutered and microchipped prior to adoption. The Humane Society’s animal behaviorists will also be on hand to provide added counseling for prospective adopters.

Anyone interested in adopting is asked to visit the Humane Society at 6230 77th St., Vero Beach or call (772) 388-3331 ext. 110. The Humane Society is open seven days a week for adoption, except major holidays: 11-6 Tuesdays, and 11-4 all other days. The shelter will be closed on Friday, March 25 in observance of Good Friday and Sunday, March 27 in observance of Easter Sunday. Animals for adoption can be seen on the shelter’s website www.hsvb.org.
