Vero Beach native, Colonel Tony Young, announces run for City Council

Vero Beach native, and Indian River County Veteran’s Council President, Tony Young announced todayhis candidacy to run for Vero Beach City Council in the upcoming election.

“Wednesday morning I’ll be filing my paperwork with the City Clerk to run for City Council,” said Young. “I’ve been asked by many of Vero Beach’s citizens to run and have been considering it for some time. Giving back to the City I love is more than just a duty, it’s an honor.”

“I want to support decisions that maintain the character of our community,” Young said. “I intend to focus on encouraging a sustainable, diversified economy by promoting local businesses that complement our community-centered, eco-friendly, coastal lifestyle. And, I want to sustain my grandfather’s vision in serving all of Vero’s residents and protecting our exceptional town.” Young’s Grandfather, A.W. “Uncle Tony” Young, was Vero’s first mayor in 1919 and served a subsequent term in 1935. He also authored the legislation act that created Indian River County.

Now back in Vero Beach full time, Tony continues his passion to serve with his Veteran’s Council membership and presidency. He also is the chair of the Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary Committee.

Tony and his wife, Sharon, live in McAnsh Park near downtown Vero. Married for over 38 years, they have a son, William Glenn of Sebastian and a daughter, Jessica Merchant of Annapolis, Maryland. Tony is a lifelong member of St. Helen Catholic Church. He has been active in ministries both in the military and locally.

The City Council election will be held November 8, 2016.
