Members of the Vero Beach Finance Commission today will consider a proposal by City staff to reduce electric rates $2 per month beginning June 15. The proposed adjustment amounts to a 1.7 percent decrease.
Some in the local media, most notably Press Journal columnist, Larry Reisman, have in the past dismissed similar rate reductions by Vero Electric as “insignificant.” Since 2013, though, a series of gradual rate reductions, including the one currently proposed, have brought the City’s rate for 1000 kWh per month down from $128.43 to $117.58.
Meanwhile, Florida Power & Light is seeking a $1.337 billion rate increase over four years, with the bulk of the hike to be imposed in 2017. The Press Journal, and Reisman specifically, has yet to report or comment on FPL’s plans to increase rates some 15 percent.

Any reduction in price is welcomed by most consumers. Two dollars may not seem like much, but add that to the savings smart shoppers can snag at the grocery store (Buy One-Get One Free or 2 for a reduced price – clearance prices–you name it) and it all adds up. That the City of Vero Beach is making an effort to help us is all I need to know. So, where has the County reduced charges to those in unincorporated areas?
You cannot expect Bob Brunjes to print any story that reports Vero Electric reductions or HUGE proposed increases by FPL(1,337 BILLION) since his lovely wife is a vice president of FPL.
