The Board of County Commissioners is pleased to announce that the County has renewed its Bronze-level status with the League of American Bicyclists in this year’s Bicycle Friendly Community Awards Program.
The League recently recognized 45 cities and towns around the United States with awards and five communities earned Honorable Mention. Five communities earned Gold-level awards and each of those five were renewing their Gold-level status.
Four entries upgraded to Silver-level status and four upgraded to Bronze from a previous Honorable Mention.
Awards are maintained for four years, at which point communities must apply to renew or upgrade their award level. Indian River County was first designated a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community in 2015, ant that designation renewed in 2019.
Indian River County is one of only four counties in Florida designated as a Bicycle Friendly Community. In total, (including cities and towns) Florida has a total of 28 designated communities. “We are proud to be one of 28 communities in Florida with a Bicycle Friendly Community designation,” said Brian Freeman MPO Staff Director.
The League reports there are now 506 Bicycle Friendly Communities in America. The Bicycle Friendly America (BFA) program has been setting (and raising) the standard for how places build and benchmark progress toward better bicycling for more than 25 years, receiving over 2,100 applications for new awards and renewals from over 860 unique communities to date.
