208th Army Band to present Patriotic Concert First Presbyterian Department of Music and Arts June 28, 7pm
The 208th Army Band from Concord, NC will be on tour in Florida and is planning a stop in Vero Beach. They will present a patriotic concert on Wednesday, June 28, 7pm. It will take place in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Boulevard in Vero Beach. This concert is free to attend.
Led by Chief Warrant Officer III Robert Slade, the 208th Army Band consists of about fifty soldiers performing music from great American composers such as Aaron Copeland, Glenn Miller, John Philip Sousa, and more. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of troops returning home from Vietnam, and Vietnam Veterans will be honored during the performance.

Showcasing the Paradise Women’s Chorale, along with the St. John’s Brass Ensemble, The Dolls, and the The Vero Beach Pipes & Drums. The concert will be held at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church at 7590 26th Street in Vero Beach. This event is free to the community; a free-will offering will be accepted.

Gallery 14 delights in bringing you this highly competitive juried summer exhibit, featuring work by artists near and far who have been inspired to creatively interpret the Crystal Jubilee theme. McKee Botanical Garden offers Local Master Balancer Adam Conard (ZOTO) will showcase his ancient art of stone balancing “Playing with Gravity”
Exhibition throughout the Garden through July 30.
Stacking stones is more popular; but done as an artform at the masterly level is very rare. Balancing and stacking stones is one of the rarest and most ancient art forms dating back to prehistoric origins and predates 2D cave paintings, which is considered one of the earliest art forms. This exhibition will feature both highlighted balances and surprise balances, including floating in the waterways at McKee. His balances are intended to inspire one to believe in the unbelievable.
In addition, visitors will have an opportunity to attempt their own balance in a sand box where you can try your hand at balancing.
VBMA presents Jack Tworkov: Drawings 1948 – 1981

In a career that played out over seven decades, two phases become clear in the work of Jack Tworkov (1900-1982) that emphasizes the artist’s progressive, conceptual, and humanist approach.
The first phase dates from the late 1940’s through the mid 1960’s and confirms Tworkov as one of the giants of the first generation of Abstract Expressionism—where emotion and his embrace of a distinct gestural mark were paramount. Drawing at this time was a method Tworkov used to “strike out in wildly different directions” so he could then go to the canvas without any preconceived plan.
The second phase, often argued into silence, dates from mid-1960’s to 1980’s, and links him to the new dialogue of minimalism. In these drawing, which take a cooler more measured approach, geometry may appear to be paramount as a bold element of the composition, but it is the measured repetitive rhythmic stroke that carries the day. In many instances, drawing was the planning stage for the painting. Tworkov’s aim was to arrive at a style in which a plan did not exclude intuitive and sometimes “random play.”
For this creative shift, Tworkov was celebrated as a Radical Pro by Art News in April 1964, and yet it was only emblematic of his emphatic desire never to repeat himself, to “paint no Tworkovs”.

VBMA presents Treasure Coast Creates: A Tribute to Local Artists

Over the years, numerous artists have settled in and around the Treasure Coast. The VBMA ‘s mission is to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work generated by contemporary artists in this summer exhibition. With over 350 applicants, and over 800 artworks to consider, Juror Ellen E. Roberts, Former Harold and Anne Berkley Smith Senior Curator of American Art at the Norton Museum of Art (West Palm Beach, FL), needed additional time to select for the show. She was impressed with the quality of the submitted work and finally selected 135 works to be featured, 35 more than the anticipated 100. To give the exhibition a curatorial structure, artwork selections were assigned one of the following six categories: Cityscape, Landscape, and Seascape; Abstract; Figurative; Photography; Sculpture, Ceramic, and 3D; Other.
Cultural Council of Indian River County is pleased to announce a new venue for Art in Public Places Program Vero Beach City Hall, 1053 20th Place, Gallery Exhibits in Hallway & Council Chambers. “Collecting Wisdom” on view through October 25 with works by Merana Cadorette on exhibit in the Hallway. Works by Barbara Krupp on view in the Council Chamber.

Aaron Collins unleashes the full force of Stravinsky’s powerful masterwork with a gigantic orchestra. A legendary, avant-garde ballet score, The Rite of Spring shocked audiences into a frenzy at its Paris premiere creating musical tremors still felt today. Once decried, it is now a cornerstone of orchestral repertoire and considered by many to be the greatest work of the 20th century. Its elemental, pulse-pounding, and heavy metal nature is best summed up by Stravinsky, who, in an unaccustomed moment of humility, said that he didn’t feel he was the composer of the piece, but simply the vessel through which it passed. The concert is rounded out with two works from Grammy-winning composer Michael Kamen. One of America’s most popular composers, Kamen’s sweeping and epic Saxophone Concerto will be performed by Andrew Cleaver. An American Symphony is the title track for the finale symphonic piece played at the end of the 1995 film Mr. Holland’s Opus. It’s poignant, touching and speaks of loss, sorrow, nostalgia, and triumph.
