The Environmental Learning Center has school break camps planned for November 20-22, 2023, and January 2-4, 2024. The first Sea To Shore Camp during Thanksgiving break is for 2nd to 5th graders and the January Sea To Shore Camp is offered to 4th through 8th grade students. These full-day camps are 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM and will give students the chance to learn about Florida’s great outdoors from ELC’s knowledgeable environmental educators. Plans are to explore the estuary and coastal habitats and wildlife along the Indian River Lagoon. Activities include a boat trip to a spoil island and Pelican Island Wildlife Refuge, a trip to Sebastian Inlet State Park, a canoe excursion, seine netting, and nature crafts. Daily agenda details are on the ELC website. Registration for the camp is $300 and ELC members are eligible for a discounted rate of $270.
Middle and high school students; 6th through 12th grade can sign up for one of the Children’s Services Advisory Council-funded STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Math) Camps. This three-day experience is from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and includes learning to fly a drone and build a robot. While on the ELC campus, STEAM campers will explore the Indian River Lagoon and the natural island environment. The camp is free for eligible participants and the requirements are in the application on the ELC website.
The non-profit Environmental Learning Center has a 64-acre island campus surrounded by the Indian River Lagoon in Vero Beach, Florida. The ELC is open seven days a week and located at the western foot of the Wabasso Bridge Indian River County at 255 Live Oak Drive. It is a destination for field trips for all ages, paddle excursions, walking trails, and wellness programs.
