Hope for Families Center receives major grant

news release

The Hope for Families Center (HFC) and the John’s Island Foundation (JIF) are proud to announce a $500,000 McCabe Leadership Grant to The Hope For Families Center. This grant
marks a defining step in HFC’s mission and will allow the organization to double the size of its short-term shelter, increasing the number of families served by 60 per year.

The lack of affordable housing in Indian River County is a critical issue. For many working families, average housing costs are absorbing an unsustainable percentage of median income, increasing housing insecurity and homeless rates. According to the 2023 “Point in Time Count,” a study conducted annually by Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council, there has been an 18% increase in homelessness and a 37% increase in the number of individuals and families who, for economic reasons, are “couch surfing” or temporarily staying with family or friends. No one feels the effects of this crisis more than the 130
families on the HFC wait-list seeking shelter.

“HFC has existed for over 30 years, aiding families in Indian River County, operating on the principle of empowerment, not dependency,” stated Marty Mercado, HFC Executive Director. The HFC model focuses on five essential keys to success: job placement, financial literacy, equity in education, health and wellness, and housing placement. The John’s Island Foundation identified Affordable Housing as a key focus area for Leadership grants earlier this year and found HFC’s holistic approach particularly impactful. Theresa Kilman, Leadership Grant Vice President of John’s Island Foundation, expressed, “The compelling nature of the HFC model aligns with our values; offering housing alone is insufficient. Wraparound services are crucial to empower homeless families to transition towards sustainable stability.”

The $500,000 grant will be instrumental in executing the first phase of a three-phase expansion plan, which includes the addition of a new wing to the main shelter, nine new transitional housing units, and, in the final phase, new administrative offices. Chuck Cunningham, the HFC Board President, highlighted the significance of this leadership grant, stating, “The support from the John’s Island Foundation means more than just financial backing. It signifies a shared understanding of our community’s dire need for affordable housing and a commitment to act.”

The John’s Island Foundation is funded solely by John’s Island Club members and since 1999, has awarded over $14 million in capital grants to Indian River County non-profits. The McCabe Leadership Grant to HFC is the second project in a new philanthropy model for JIF that began last year with a $200,000 grant to the Coalition for Attainable Homes. JIF President Don Blair commented, “Through the Leadership Grant program, we’re seeking to have a greater impact on the most significant issues affecting people in the County. With the support of the John’s Island membership, we hope to make more Leadership Grants like this in the future.”
