Cameron Cruz is a fourth grader at Liberty Magnet Elementary. He re-enrolled in the program this year and was proud to be The Young Journalists spokesperson at the Quail Valley Charities check presentation on March 5.
The Young Journalist is a free offering of the School District’s Extended Day Program with over 100 third, fourth and fifth graders emphasizing reading, reading comprehension and writing.
Through the study of journalism, the program improves the quality of both early childhood reading and writing, through an innovative curriculum and research based pedagogical standards, as well as the design of imaginative play materials and learning environments to establish retention.
In their recent magazine, student’s articles ranged from “Why did Hamas attack Israel?” “Why did Israel attack Gaza?” and how “Starbucks was inspired by Moby Dick.” As such, the program encourages critical thinking about the world around us.
“If comprehension is about knowledge, you can absolutely measure what a student knows about content through their writing about it.” (Source: The Learning Alliance.)
According to Cam, “We all love the program and thank Quail Valley Charities for helping us grow.”
