Public workshop: Should County expand urban boundaries?

news release

Public engagement is a crucial part of the Urban Service Boundary Study process. The Board of County Commissioners cares about the opinions of IRC citizens and they are encouraging all interested parties to attend one or all six of the upcoming workshops to be held in three separate locations. “We would like citizens to have the opportunity to directly share their personal vision for the future of our County,” said Commission Chair Susan Adams.
The Urban Service Boundary area establishes where urban facilities such as water and sewer lines are constructed, where urban services are provided, and where urban development will be both accommodated and prohibited. The current boundary is located almost entirely east of Interstate 95, except for an area along the State Road 60 corridor and property within the City of Fellsmere.
“Population projections are projected to reach 210,000 by 2050, a 25% increase from today which is why the evaluation of available land to accommodate the projections, and an evaluation of the costs associated with providing public services is a high priority for the County,” said Adams.
“We are enjoying a great response to the survey on the County website, and we believe in-person workshops will provide us even greater insights into what the citizens of the County expect as we journey into the future,” said Andrew Sobczak, IRC Planning & Development Services Director. “Understanding citizen expectations is a vital element to the planning and policy decision making process.”

“The Commission applauds staff’s effort to organize six opportunities for in-person engagement, three during the mid-morning and three in the evening. This level of availability is reflective of the value we place on citizen input,” said Adams.
