news release
The National Hurricane Center has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for the east coast of Florida including Indian River County. John Titkanich, County Administrator, encourages all residents to stay aware and prepare for the storm. It is anticipated that the weather could deteriorate to tropical storm conditions and that 20-30 miles per hour sustained winds are expected in our area with wind gusts between 40-50 miles per hour.
Rainfall is anticipated to be 1-4 inches, and the National Hurricane Center has issued a flood watch until 8:00am until Friday (9/27) Friday morning warning there could be flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. It is reasonable to anticipate standing water in the swales. “We are fortunate to be away from the direct path however, we are urging citizens to monitor weather reports for warnings of tornado activity,” said Titkanich.
The IRC Emergency Operations Center has been activated and will be open at 8:00 am Thursday, September 26th, at a Level 2-Partial activation. Emergency management staff will be monitoring the storm conditions and be available to assist our western neighboring counties who are in the direct path, according to Ryan Lloyd, Deputy Director of Emergency Services. County Administration and Board of County Commission Offices will be open. “At this time, we do not anticipate opening shelters,” added Lloyd.
