County celebrates grand opening of Jones’ Pier Interpretive Center

news release

If you love history and appreciate natural resources, join the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners for the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of the Jones’ Pier Interpretive Center on Saturday, March 21, at 2:00 p.m. The ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m.

This celebratory event marks the completion of the restoration of the historic Jones family home. Built in 1923 from durable Miami-Dade pine, the home withstood storm events for more than 100 years. Restoration began in 2017 following the 10-foot storm surge resulting from Hurricane Matthew in 2016. The home was elevated five feet to prevent future flooding, and a design to re-purpose the home into an interpretive center was completed. Renovations included restoring the original flooring, remodeling of the interior layout, inclusion of educational displays and exhibits, construction of a large aquarium featuring native species, and a children’s area dedicated to Mary Jones that includes an interactive display and nature-based play resources. One of the best views in the County may be enjoyed sitting in the rocking chairs on the renovated screened porch.

The site will be open to the public and will serve as an educational stop highlighting the experiences of the Jones family along the historic Jungle Trail. In addition to the interpretive center, guests can enjoy tours showcasing the many site improvements, including historic buildings, walking trails, the man-made salt marsh and other natural areas, as well as the Tunes at the Lagoon concert beginning at 4 p.m.

Chairman Deryl Loar noted the importance of preserving the County’s history while expanding public access to its natural resources. “The restoration of the Jones family home reflects Indian River County’s commitment to preserving our history while creating meaningful opportunities for residents and visitors to experience the story of the Jungle Trail and the people who helped shape this community.”

Guests may access Jones’ Pier from Jungle Trail and will be directed by County staff to the appropriate parking for the event. For more information about the event, please contact the Conservation Lands Division office at (772) 226-1790.
