County invites public participation in Preservation Plan Workshop

news release

The Indian River County Natural Resources Department invites residents, business owners, and coastal stakeholders to attend an upcoming public workshop focused on the County’s Beach Preservation Plan (BPP) update — the long-term, science-based strategy guiding the monitoring, restoration, and management of the County’s 22.4 miles of Atlantic coastline.

The workshop will provide an opportunity for the public to learn about the changes to our coastline, past beach restoration efforts, coastal risk analyses, the influence of sea level rise and how we explore alternative management strategies. Attendees will also be able to engage directly with County staff and coastal experts, ask questions, and provide valuable feedback.

PUBLIC WORKSHOP DETAILS:

Date: Tuesday, April 14 Time: 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM

Location: Indian River Shores Community Center 6001
Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway (A1A), Indian River Shores, FL 32963

The evening will begin with a brief public Beach and Shores Advisory Committee meeting which will include a presentation introducing the Draft 2026 BPP update, including insights from the County’s consultants. Following the presentation, attendees are invited to participate in an open house style workshop featuring informational exhibits and posters. County staff and technical experts will be available throughout the event to answer questions and discuss key topics such as shoreline changes, storm resilience, environmental protection, and future management strategies.

Public input is a vital part of the planning process. Attendees will have multiple opportunities to share comments during and after the workshop, including an online comment form and other submission options.

The BPP has guided coastal management in Indian River County since its adoption in 1988 and is updated periodically to reflect evolving environmental conditions, storm impacts, and advancements in coastal science. Community participation ensures the plan continues to reflect local priorities while balancing coastal protection, environmental stewardship, and public access.
