Doug and Dori Coffey walked into Royal Ballroom Dance Studio to take a few dance lessons before they went on a cruise. They wanted their dreams of sweeping across the dance floor while gliding across the ocean to become reality.

Unfortunately, the shipboard activities did not include many waltzes or fox trots but they loved their lessons and learning new steps so much that they decided to continue with lessons. Four years later, they are still dancing.

“We find dancing gives us the exercise we would get at a gym and is an activity we can do together, said Doug Coffey.  “In addition to exercising the body, as we continue to progress and learn more dances and programs, it is an amazing workout for the mind.”

The Coffeys have been selected as the February Students of the Month at Royal Ballroom in Vero Beach. The couple takes private couple lessons as well as participating in a few of the diverse group classes offered each week including the Argentine Tango on Monday evenings.

“When Doug and Dori started taking lessons in 2008, they were very clear their intention was purely social with no interest in competitions. Their work requires a lot of travel and so it is important to them to enjoy their time in the studio,” said Asya Dimitrova, co-owner and professional ballroom dance instructor. “They are serious during lessons while laughing a lot.”

“Meeting other dancers and attending the Royal Ballroom parties allows another opportunity to practice in the friendly company of others who share our interest in dance,” said Mrs. Coffey.

Since 2004, Royal Ballroom Dance Studio has provided professional instruction in social and competitive International Style Ballroom and Latin, American Style Smooth and Rhythm, and Argentine Tango. The dance studio is located at 713 US Highway 1.

Individual lessons for adults as well as group classes, wedding dance choreography and Father Daughter dance classes are offered every week. Packages are available for anyone wanting to explore ballroom dancing. Additional information is available at or 299-5772.
