From the local press, deafening silence

From the time the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission released its report approving Florida Power & Light’s proposed acquisition of Vero Electric, it took TCPalm.com and the island weekly’s companion online publication VeroNews.com no more than a few hours to post the good news.  Yet, a full day has passed since news broke of a letter from Florida Municipal Power Agency General Manager and CEO Nick Gurriello to FLP President Eric Silagy.  Gurriello wrote Saligy questioning the accuracy of quotes attributed to FPL spokespersons by Vero Beach 32963 reporter Lisa Zahner.  SEE EARLIER STORY

One of several quotes challenged by Gurriello was attributed to FPL External Affairs Manager Amy Brunjes, wife of Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers Publisher, Bob Brunjes.

Will Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers and the Press Journal shield its readers from news that the accuracy of a statement made by the publisher’s wife before the Vero Beach Utilities Commission has been challenged by the head of the FMPA?  For now, there is only a silence.

Will the island weekly let its reader know the accuracy of quotes it published have been questioned?  Time will tell.  Again, for now, there is only a deafening silence.

On the subject of FPL’s funding of a new electioneering communication organization promoting Tracy Carroll’s re-election, which is an obvious attempt by an outside organization to manipulate the outcome of a local election, there is from Vero Beach 32963 and the Press Journal only silence.

The same FPL-sponsored group, Citizens for a Better Future, is seeking signed pledges from the candidates running for City Council to support the sale of the city’s electric system under any an all conceivable circumstances.  The seeking of such a pledge by a group that is for all intents and purposes an extension of FPL, seems highly questionable.  Yet, from the Vero Beach 32963 and the Press Journal there is only silence.

  1. What can you expect from the press journal, when FPL Amy is married to the Bob Brunjes. At best we get filtered news. When they think the news is bad for FPL they just don’t print it. 32963 is no better as we are all aware. Set a goal and write only what is ok to achieve that goal. Both are poor examples of what a news outlets should be.. Both outlets leave much to be desired. Both cannot be trusted to convey the facts when it comes to the FPL We have a SORRY state of journalism here in Vero. When will it end ?
