Elizabeth (Betsy) Gridley Peters Callahan died suddenly at home in Vero Beach FL on December 23, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Frank Hart Peters and the late Betty Jackson Peters of New York City and Wainscot, LI. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Paul A. Callahan, daughters Elizabeth Morley Callahan of Otego, NY, Anne Gridley Graves [Gary] of Raubsville, PA, son Peter Hart Callahan [Josephine] of Haverford, PA, New York City, and Nantucket, and two grandchildren, P. Hart Callahan Jr. of Newport, RI and Juliet Wetherill Callahan of Haverford, PA. She attended the Nightingale Bamford School in New York City and graduated from St. Mary’s Episcopal in Poughkeepsie, NY. Married in 1955, she raised her children in Greenwich, CT, where she belonged to The Green Fingers Garden Club. She also belonged, at various times, to The Belle Haven Club, Greenwich Field Club, Indian Harbor Yacht Club, all of Greenwich, the Nantucket Yacht Club, Nantucket, MA, the Moorings Yacht and Country Club in Vero Beach and was the current President of the Sea Oats Garden Club in Vero Beach. She was co-owner of Thimbles Inc., a needlepoint and yarn store in Greenwich from 1975 to 1982. During the 1980s, she was Vice President and a Board member of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital and a member of the Nantucket Garden Club. In Vero Beach she was a long-time volunteer, former Board member, and current Advisor of McKee Botanical Garden, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Moorings Property Owners Association. During the 1980s, she and her husband, accompanied by her first corgi, Tad, cruised the coastal waters from Maine to the Florida Keys and out to the Bahamas. Two corgis followed Tad: Punch and current resident Rookie. All avid skiers, sailors, and beach lovers, the family had a vacation home in Vermont and on Nantucket island. Betsy loved life-from cooking, gardening, birding, and walking her dog on the beach-all things she shared with her children and many friends. Her warmth, enthusiasm, delight in life, love of people and animals, and joy is deeply missed but lives on in those who knew her. A memorial service will be held at St Augustine Episcopal Church in Vero Beach on February 1 at 11:am. Burial will be private. Richard J. Durling, 76, of Queensbury, passed away on January 1st in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was born January 25, 1937 in Nekoosa, Wisconsin to the late Albert and Anna (Goetz) Durling. Dick spent his working years in photography, a world he loved. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, who was so proud of his family with strong ties throughout his life. He is survived by his loving wife and constant companion, Margaret; his daughter, Amy (Bob) Cahan; son, Michael (Deanna Johnson) Durling; his beloved grandsons, Coby and Avi Durling and Deanna’s children, Jeanine and Daniel Rodriquez, and his sister, Mary Anna (Bob) Whiting. He was predeceased by his brother, Edward (Jeanne) Durling, and sister, Francis Renard. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Vero Beach, FL. Memorial contributions may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, 1201 SE Indian Street, Stuart, FL 34997. Please share condolences at http://www.coxgiffordseawinds.com.
