Detroit Symphony to perform on March 2 at Community Church

The Indian River Symphonic Association’s sixth Concert in this Winter’s Series will bring the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and its world-renowned Director Leonard Slatkin, to our area on Sunday, March 2, 7:30 pm at Community Church.

The DSO’s program will include works by Morton Gould and Maurice Ravel and will feature Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in D-flat major, Op 10 performed by Olga Kern.  In 2001, Ms. Kern was the first woman in over thirty years to receive the Gold Medal at the 11th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.  Ms. Kern is a laureate of eleven international competitions, and is now recognized as one of her generation’s great pianists.

Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev began composing in 1896 at age five, and at age thirteen became the youngest student to enter the St. Petersburg Conservatory.  At age twenty-three, Prokofiev performed his Piano Concerto No. 1, winning the coveted Anton Rubinstein Prize – as well as a grand piano—a crucial asset for a young artist beginning his career.

Leonard Slatkin Is Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre National de Lyon, France.  His 100+ recordings have won seven Grammy awards and earned 64 nominations, and he has received the USA’s prestigious National Medal of Arts.  Slatkin has also served as Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony and Washington, D.C.’s National Symphony Orchestra, and Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London.

  1. Went to the website for more information and discovered the concert is SOLD OUT – as are 3 or 4 other concerts offered prior to that – by other musical groups. That is a good thing – but not for someone just hearing about it.
