Moss goes fishing, comes up empty-handed

COMMENTARY

“In what has to be the absolute height of irony, if not hypocrisy, Moss wrote, ‘Is there any prohibition against political campaigning inside governmental offices? ‘ Moss parades herself before the cameras at nearly every City Council meeting, usually to say something bordering on incomprehensible.  Moss’ email to Coment is just the latest example of how, day by day, she says and does things that raise questions about her own competence, judgment and loyalty to the people of Vero Beach.”

Perhaps smarting over revelations about her ill-advised, direct email communication with fellow members of the Utilities Commission, Laura Moss raised questions this week about Mayor Jay Kramer’s right to speak before the Utilities Commission. Moss, a candidate for City Council, also questioned the Mayor’s right to be in City Hall wearing clothing imprinted with political advertising. (Kramer challenged incumbent County Commissioner, and fellow Republican, Bob Solari, in the Aug 30 primary election.)

Moss expressed her concerns to City Attorney Wayne Coment in an email titled “Conduct of an Elected Official.”  Moss’ fishing expedition appears to be nothing more than an attempt to divert attention from Sunshine Law concerns raised by her email practices.

In his written reply to Moss, Coment assured her there is no legal basis for any of her feigned concerns. “Please note that a council member does not check their rights to express their views under the protections of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution upon being elected any more than a board or commission member loses such rights when they are appointed to one of the council’s advisory board,” The City Attorney wrote.

In what has to be the absolute height of irony, if not hypocrisy, Moss wrote, “Is there any prohibition against political campaigning inside governmental offices?’  Moss parades herself before the cameras at nearly every City Council meeting, usually to say something bordering on incomprehensible.  Moss’ email to Coment is just the latest example of how, day by day, she says and does things that raise questions about her own competence, judgment and loyalty to the people of Vero Beach.

If Moss and one more Shores loyalist, perhaps Lange Sykes, are elected to the City Council, they will surely join with Harry Howle in approving a sale of the City’s Shores customers at a price too low to protect everyone else from higher rates and higher taxes.

Moss, Howle, and a third council person of like mind could also succeed in turning back the City’s strong stand against short term rentals.  To join the County in sacrificing neighborhoods for the benefit of short-term rental operators, a new Council majority could simply refuse to spend the money necessary to defend the City’s position in court. This is exactly the tack Pilar Turner has taken. Fortunately, at least until now, Turner has not been able to get two other Council members to join her in rolling out the red carpet for short term rental operators.

To be sure, the November 8 City Council election will have significant and lasting consequences.

  1. Mark, what do you mean “bordering on incomprehensible”. what she drones at council meetings is incomprehensible pure and simple. Please never use the word” competent “when referring to Moss. the two have no relationship. I suggest she read the constitution before writing to the city attorney;. he has better things to do.

  2. Everything Moss says at a council meeting is political. It has been said by many that she uses the council meetings to promote her chances of being elected to the council. The more she speaks at council meetings ,the deeper the hole she digs for herself politically. Fortunately, residents can see her on tv and judge for themselves.
