“Sylvia” Opens Theatre Guild Season – The Vero Beach Theatre Guild is opening its 59th season with A. R. Gurney’s hilarious Broadway comedy, Sylvia, directed by Ben Earman. Financial trader, Greg (Daniel M. Hall), and his English teacher wife, Kate (Heather Stapleton), have moved to Manhattan after twenty two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg brings home a stray dog he found in the park, bearing only the name Sylvia on its name tag. A street smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia (Abby Bolduc) becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection and Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn’t understand the relationship between man and dog. After a series of uproarious complications, the marriage is put in serious jeopardy. Gurney’s Sylvia has three additional characters- an eccentric dog walker, a snooty socialite and a sexually ambiguous marriage therapist, all performed by Austin Peer. Sylvia opens Thursday, September 15 and runs through Sunday, September 25, with four matinees and six evening performances. Tickets are $24 and $26 and may be purchased by calling 562-8300 or online at verobeachtheatreguild.com. The Vero Beach Theatre Guild is located at 2020 San Juan Avenue, directly west of the county administration buildings.
