Florida Humanities Series lecturer looks a early European colonization in Florida

Michael Francis

Would you believe… Europeans settled ‘La Florida’ long before Jamestown?

Sorry, Jamestown, but Dr. Michael Francis is coming to set the record straight.

Almost a century before the English settled at Jamestown, Virginia, Europeans colonized Florida where their offspring have remained. This often-ignored, misunderstood period in American history is the subject of Dr. Michael Francis’ 7:00 p.m. lecture on March 9 at The Emerson Center in Vero Beach. The event is part of the venue’s popular Florida Humanities Series and admission is free.

Dr. Francis is a master storyteller who delivers a captivating, often humorous perspective that brings his presentation to life. Francis is a Professor of History at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg.

“Dr. Francis spoke here last year,” recalls Amy Gallo, executive director of The Emerson Center. “At the end of the program, our audience had just one regret – that the evening couldn’t last longer.” As a result, The Emerson Center invited Francis back again with a promise that he will dig even deeper into the history of this period.

Free general admission is offered on a first-come-first-served basis.  No ticket is necessary.  Guests are encouraged to arrive early to socialize and claim preferred seating.
