The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) welcomes Karen Schievelbein to their board of directors. A VNA and Hospice Foundation board member and finance committee member, Schievelbein’s professional background includes business development, financial analysis, risk management and accounting. She has served as chief financial officer for Blue Cross of California, Blue Shield of California and United Behavioral Health before becoming the chief operating officer of Spectera UnitedHealthcare Dental from which she retired in 2007.

”The role of the VNA and Hospice Foundation is to strategically build and strengthen relationships with people interested in supporting the local health care delivery system  and specifically the areas of home health care, hospice services and community wellness programs through the VNA,” said Anne Cooney, Chair of the Foundation’s Nominating Committee. “Karen’s unique health care experience and accounting expertise aligned well with our organization’s commitment to accountability, fiscal responsibility and transparency for our donors and partners.”

Earning a Bachelor of Science degree in General Management and Accounting from Purdue, Schievelbein went on to achieve a CPA certification from the State of Illinois in 1980. She obtained an MBA in marketing and finance from Northwestern University in 1986, and served as a board member on Audit and Product Development committees for BCBSA Federal Employees Health in Washington, D.C. from 1994-1999. Past board involvement also includes: Campfire Boys and Girls, Partners, Children Now, Key West Film Society/Topic Cinema and Key West Art and Historical Society. Locally, she is a member of Indian River Impact 100 and the Quail Valley Charity Cup Executive Committee.

The VNA is the only non-profit home care and hospice provider in Indian River County. For over 42 years, the community has trusted VNA nurses, therapists, aides and staff to care for them in their homes. The organization offers three core service lines – private care, home healthcare and hospice – as well as providing community services like no-cost blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, flu vaccination clinics and it’s VNA Health Care on Wheels clinic.
