The A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery teeters “On the Edge of Madness” with an exciting exhibition of more than 50 original works by Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta and other masters exploring the wonderful and strange imagery of Surrealism (at right). Visit Seriously Mixed Media, 207 Orange Avenue in downtown Fort Pierce as well as several other downtown businesses every Wednesday from 5 to 8 pm during “Sip & Shop” for the holidays.  Wednesday night “Sip & Shop” continues through December 20.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7

The Environmental Learning Center invites people interested in helping out to its Volunteer Open House on Thursday, December 7 from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. Assist their Naturalists, be a Greeter, be on the Green Landscape Team, be a canoe guide or a pontoon boat guide, be a Touch Tank docent, help in the office and more!

The Senior Resource Association’s Silver Tones Choir will perform Christmas: North, South, East, West on Thursday, December 7 at 7 pm. at First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach.  Admission is free, however donations will be greatly appreciated.

Join Joseph Gramm at 2 p.m., on Thursday, December 7, at the North Indian River County Library for “Classic Films with a Twist,” which includes a full-length showing of a feature film followed by discussion and a trivia contest with prizes and refreshments. Admission is free.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8

The Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce hosts St. Lucie Ballet with The Nutcracker on Friday, December 8 at 7:30 pm.  For tickets ($35/$30/$25) visit SunriseTheatre.com.

The Center for Spiritual Care will hold its annual benefit luncheon at the Grand Harbor Club on Friday, December 8 from noon – 2 pm.  Tickets are $50.00 per person.  Proceeds from this event will underwrite the Center’s 2018 program activities and services for the local community.   These include meditation groups, art exhibitions, seminars, workshops, wellness and self-care events, creative classes and ongoing recovery and support groups. Howl at the Moon Experience – Ugly Christmas Sweater Party! features musicians Orin Sands and Ken Gustafson with shows at 7:30 and 9:30 pm.

Live in the Loop free outside concerts begin at 6:30 pm.  Friday night is Johnny & The Blaze (Rock & Oldies) and Saturday features Pretty Ruthless (Modern Country & Classic Rock). 

Riverside Theatre For Kids:  A Christmas Story, The Musical – December 8-16.  Based on the movie classic, this Broadway musical, set in the 1940s in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana, follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas gifts—an Official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot Range Model air rifle.  December 8 & 15 @ 7:30pm  December 9 & 16 @ 2:00 pm & 5:30pm.  Tickets: $10.  Visit RiversideTheatre.com

 

SATURDAY DECEMBER 9

Main Street Vero Beach will hold its Vintage Market on Saturday, December 9 on 14th Avenue downtown from 9 am to 4 pm.  Visit vendors with Antiques, Vintage Decor, handcrafted decor and green products.  Enjoy street performers and a variety of treats.  Free. 

The Vero Beach Yacht Club will hold its annual Blessing of the Fleet on Saturday December 9, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The ceremony is open to all boaters in Indian River and surrounding counties.  Tradition calls for guests on board to cast flowers into the water as their boat passes the clergy on the VBYC main dock. Interested boaters should register their boat names with the Club beforehand at 772-231-2211, so they can be announced as they pass by.  More information is available on www.verobeachyachtclub.com.

The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVB) will be hosting a “Vote for Florida’s Animals” breakfast on Saturday, December 9 from 9:30-11:00 a.m.  Florida Director Kate MacFall from Humane Society of the United States and Carey Theil, co-founder of Grey2KUSA will be speaking about upcoming state legislation and how your votes will help Florida’s racing greyhounds, pets and wildlife. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 10

The Treasure Coast Rock & Gem Society will have a Field Trip and Dig at the Fort Drum Crystal Mine on Sunday, December 10.  Meet at Cracker Barrel parking lot off Hwy. 60 at 8 am to leave for the mine at 8:30 am.  The cost is Adult $60, 10 or more people $50 and Children under age 15, $10.  Contact Darryl at 772-633-4423 for information on what items you will need to bring.

Save the date for Ballet Vero Beach’s fifth anniversary season! The company is thrilled to announce the world premiere of Nutcracker on the Indian River with performances December 29 and 30 at the VBHS Performing Arts Center.
