Riverside Theatre for Kids, the educational arm of Riverside Theatre, presents a benefit performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, Jr. on January 5 & 6 to assist performers going to the Junior Theatre Festival in Atlanta on January 12-14, 2018.
The Junior Theater Festival (JTF) is the world’s biggest and best celebration of young people performing musical theater.
JTF brings together student musical theater troupes from all over the world for a weekend of musical theater mayhem and madness. Each troupe performs fifteen minutes from a Broadway Junior show for adjudication by a panel of musical theater experts. The weekend also features professional development for teachers, workshops for students and parents, a New Works Showcase featuring new musical adaptations soon to be released, and concludes with a grand finale concert headlined by
The Junior Theater Festival is sponsored by Playbill, Disney Musicals and Music Theatre International.
“We have been proud to attend the festival since 2009, with JTF 2018 being our tenth visit to the Festival,” says Kevin Quillinan, Riverside Theatre’s Director of Theatre Education. “Over the years we have been pleased to be recognized with many awards, including Outstanding Dance, Outstanding Actor, and being awarded Outstanding Music multiple times. This year the show we are presenting in Atlanta is The Pirates of Penzance Jr., an adaptation of the perennial Gilbert and Sullivan classic and we will be bringing a cast of 36 students, our largest yet to the festival.
“Part of the reason we are bringing so many is that Riverside has made it cost effective, saving each student an average of $500 based on past costs!”
A benefit concert performance of the entire show, a first time event, will be held to help keep costs low for the students.
The Pirates of Penzance Jr. performs January 5 & 6, 2018 on the Anne Morton Stage at Riverside Theatre. Tickets are by donation with a suggested amount of $10, but larger donations are gratefully accepted. Tickets are limited and can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 772-231-6990 or online at http://www.riversidetheatre.com.
