Sheriff’s Office investigating suspicious letter sent to School District superintendent

NEWS RELEASE

Yesterday afternoon, an employee at the Indian River County School District was opening mail. Upon opening one letter with no return address attached, she found disturbing words scrawled on the front and back single page letter. Shortly thereafter, she began to feel ill. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and Indian River County Fire Rescue responded and treated the incident as a hazardous materials incident until tests could be completed. Fire Rescue determined that no chemicals were present and the letter was turned over to detectives for follow up. The School District employee recovered and is back to work.

Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar stated, “We are investigating this strange letter and are releasing photos of the letter today. We believe this letter originated from outside of the county, but want our community to take a look at the letter to determine if they recognize anything of value. We always take every threat to our schools as credible until we can prove otherwise and this is no exception.” The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office continues to offer a hot-line for school related incidents at 772-978-6116 or tips@ircsheriff.org . Anyone with information about this letter or any other school related incidents are encouraged to call. Anything require immediate response should be directed to 9-1-1.
