MEET THE ARTISTS AT THE FOYER GALLERY OF ART

A new exhibit of photography as well as mixed media wall sculptures is now on View at the Foyer Gallery of Art in the Emerson Center. Meet the artists tomorrow night (Thursday, October 11) from 5 to 7 pm. Exhibiting photographers are Shelley Stang, Arlene Willnow, Lisa Willnow and Barbara Whitlam. Rooted in Memory is the collection of mixed media wall sculptures by Ruth Feldman. In addition, Paul R. Davis is exhibiting his paintings of boats in the Emerson Center Lobby. ENJOY AN EVENING IN PARIS AT THE HERITAGE CENTER
Vero Heritage, 2140 14th Avenue, is hosting An Evening in Paris on Thursday, October 11th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Over 20 local vendors will transform the Heritage Center in to a Parisian-style evening street market, to create the shopping event of the season. Tickets include a complementary reusable event shopping bag, a welcome glass of bubbly, abundant French hors d’ouevres, and of course, French wines! Returning this year are the Moulin Rouge style dancers. The Parisian Hostess will be taking the runway by storm with her lively Parisianista fashion show. LEARN ABOUT FLORIDA’S LIGHTHOUSES

Florida archaeologist and historian Brendan Burke is coming to Vero Beach to explore the stories of Florida’s lighthouses in a free presentation at The Emerson Center at 7 pm. on Thursday, October 11. Burke, Associate Director of Archaeology with the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, will appear as part of the venue’s popular Florida Humanities Series. Burke will relate how shifting sandbars, reef-strewn shallows, hurricanes, earthquakes, even military attacks have challenged Florida’s important aids-to-navigation. He will explain how the Sunshine State’s lighthouses have been a source or curiosity, folklore, and refuge. In addition, he will relate the history of Florida’s lighthouses and recall stories from our legacy of lighting the coast.

Apron Series Plays begin this weekend at the Vero Beach Theatre Guild with “12 Angry Men” by Sherman L. Sergel, on October 12, 13 & 14 at 7:30 pm. A 19-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. “He doesn’t stand a chance,” mutters the guard as the 12 jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. BIRD & NATURE ART SHOW THIS WEEKEND
The Pelican Island Preservation Society hosts the juried Indian River Bird and Nature Art Show from Friday, October 12 through Sunday, October 14 at the Sebastian River Art Club, 1245 Main Street in Sebastian. There will be a Plein Air paint out on Friday from 9-3 pm at both the SRAC location and the Pelican Island National Refuge. An artists’ reception will be held on Friday from 6-8 pm. The show will be open to the public Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 9-4. On Saturday a sunset cocktail cruise to Pelican Island Wildlife Refuge will be offered with tour leader and Naturalist, Heather Stapleton at 5 pm with a cost of $45. At 3:30 pm there is a keynote speech about National Refuge week by retired USFWS Missi Hatfield. The cruise and speech will be held at Capt. Hiram’s on Indian River Drive. THE “BEST OF THE BEST” ON VIEW AT BACKUS MUSEUM
The A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery, 500 N. Indian River Drive in Fort Pierce, presents “The Best of the Best” annual juried art exhibit on Sunday, October 14 from Noon to 4 pm. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, October 13 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm when prizes will be awarded by the jury to the artists. Reception admission is free to artists who applied to exhibit and one guest; free for Backus Museum Members; and a $20 donation will be accepted for non-members. Non members may join the Museum for $50 a year which includes admission to all the Museum’s opening receptions. The exhibit will be on view until November 16.
