Kicking Ballet Vero Beach’s sixth season into high gear, the company is thrilled to announce Nutcracker on the Indian River with performances December 30 and 31 and Program 2: Premieres with performances January 4 and 5. Both events will be held at the VBHS Performing Arts Center. Tickets range from $10-$75 and can be purchased at balletverobeach.org or by calling the VBHS Performing Arts Center Box Office at 772-564-5537. Pairing these two vastly different offerings within one week of each other showcases the depth and breadth of offerings local audiences have come to expect from the young company.
Nutcracker on the Indian River uses Tchaikovsky’s thrilling score, but sets the stage on Christmas Eve 1919, the year Vero Beach was chartered. Marie, the young heroine of the story, and her family, journey from Grand Central Station to Florida in a spectacular adventure that prominently features the Indian River Lagoon. This year’s production features an expanded partnership with The Indian River Land Trust to move the production beyond the stage with walk through exhibits at the venue that highlight lagoon health and preservation. Additional partnerships include The City of Vero Beach Centennial and a “Muttcracker” partnership with the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County through which adoptable dogs will make their stage debut!
Program 2: Premieres features the company premiere of Matthew Carter’s lush and romantic French Songs, staged to Joseph Canteloube’s Songs of the Auvergne, Ritornello, an energetic neoclassical world premiere by Ballet Vero Beach Ballet Master Camilo A. Rodriguez, and the acquisition of Ariel Grossman’s exquisitely crafted Ori which received rave reviews when showcased at the 2017 Riverside Dance Festival. The program promises a thrilling counterpoint to the spectacle of Nutcracker on the Indian River and will showcase the company’s range with work spanning from classical to contemporary.
