Desmond Meade, who grew up in Gifford, and rose from a felony conviction, paying his debt to society, earning a law degree, then becoming an advocate for an ex-convict’s right to vote, was named as one of the Time Magazine Top 100 Most Influential People of 2019. His cause was successful, resulting in the overwhelming decision of Florida voters by referendum on the November 2018 ballot to restore those rights.
