ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
The Treasure Coast Wind Ensemble is back again to perform their annual concert, Psalms and Songs, on Friday, June 7, at 7:00pm in the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, 1707 16th Street, Vero Beach. Admission is free; donations are appreciated.
The Treasure Coast Wind Ensemble, directed by Colbert Page Howell, is in its twelfth consecutive season. The group consists of amateur and semi-professional wind musicians from throughout the Treasure Coast and meets in the summer of each year, having only a handful of rehearsals before debuting their selections in a one-night-only engagement.
This year’s concert, entitled Psalms and Songs, will feature the following titles: Symphonic Songs for Band by Robert Russell Bennett, Colonial Song by Percy Grainger, Psalm for Band by Vincent Persichetti, Serenade in Eb by Richard Strauss, Sketches on a Tudor Psalm by Fisher Tull, and Sea Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams. All of these selections were carefully chosen by Howell to not only exemplify the raw talents and skill set of the group but also in an effort to showcase quality wind band compositions that are not as well-known as other works written by the same composers. Each performance will feature a different mixture of musicians on stage, ranging in numbers from twenty to nearly sixty.
Treasure Coast Wind Ensemble is the only musical organization of its kind on the Treasure Coast. Founded in 2008, it is comprised of band directors, music teachers, freelance musicians, and student musicians from the Space Coast, Treasure Coast, and Palm Beach areas. The ensemble’s goal is to perform an annual summer concert of all original wind music as well as a rewarding playing experience for the musicians. Music chosen for each concert spans several hundred years and is drawn from the chamber wind, brass ensemble, wind orchestra, and symphonic band repertoire.
