NEW EXHIBITS AT THE VERO BEACH MUSEUM OF ART
Two new exhibits opened June 1 at the Vero Beach Museum of Art: Astronomy Photographer of the Year is on view through September 29. The Royal Observatory Greenwich’s hugely popular Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2018 celebrates the very best in astrophotography from around the world. This exhibition features approximately 50 photographs of celestial spectacles chosen from entries to the photography competition. Each year since 2009, the Royal Observatory in London has invited entries in categories such as Aurorae, Galaxies, Our Moon, Our Sun, People and Space, Planets, Comets and Asteroids, Skyscapes, and Stars and Nebulae. Ai WeiWei’s Circle of Animals /Zodiac Heads: Gold (2010) is on view in the Stark Rotunda. The display consists of a dozen gilded bronze sculptures representing the animal symbols of the traditional Chinese zodiac.
SUMMER FUN FOR KIDS
The City of Vero Beach Recreation Department will hold Gymnastics and Performing Arts registration on Saturday, June 15 beginning at 8 am at Leisure Square Fitness Center (3705 16th Street). There are gymnastics and aerial classes available for beginners through advanced students. This performance-based program offers instruction for toddlers through teens. Registration will remain open until classes are full. The Vero Beach Museum of Art has a choice of morning or afternoon art camp for children ages 5 to 16. These week-long camps are taught by professional artists and offer a wide variety of experiences. Upcoming themes are City Adventures, Abstract Adventures and Upcycle Adventures. Creatively themed weekly sessions will take campers through the Museum’s galleries and into the art studios. The Gifford Youth Orchestra will hold a Community Barbecue and Fish Fry Saturday, June 15, from 11:30 to 4:00 at Martin Luther King Park in Gifford. The park is located across from the Gifford Middle School at 4530 28th Court. The day’s menu will consist of barbecued ribs as well as chicken and fried fish sandwiches prepared by two of Gifford’s highly acclaimed chefs, C.J. Walker and Larry Wilson. Music will be provided by DJ, Mighty Mike Baisden. There will be a Free Ice Cream from Kona for all Children under 12 attending with their parents. The GYO teaches music to children in the county whose families could afford neither lessons nor instruments. Proceeds from the BBQ will benefit this ongoing program. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and may be purchased online at gyotigers.org.
