Hops Against Hunger swaps food for brew during Hunger Action Month

Hops Against Hunger, the popular hunger-fighting partnership with area breweries, is spreading throughout the Treasure Coast this year.

The three-year-old event that takes place during Hunger Action Month and benefits Treasure Coast Food Bank now will include locations in Martin and St. Lucie counties as well as the Vero Beach venues where it began. Each participating location will vie to see which can bring in the most food and dollars for Treasure Coast Food Bank.

The coalition of breweries, restaurants and good-hearted beer fans come together at their favorite watering holes to help solve hunger along the Treasure Coast. Each person who brings in a minimum of 5 cans will receive a complementary pint – or Voodoo bucket in the case of Waldo’s. Patrons also can purchase raffle tickets to win prizes donated by each venue.

“This is a really fun way to take action in the fight against hunger,” said Judith Cruz, President and CEO of Treasure Coast Food Bank. “It’s a competition, but the true winners are all those who struggle with hunger in our community.”

It kicks off September 19 through 21 when Vero Beach venues Walking Tree Brewery, Kilted Mermaid, and Waldo’s host the event. Visit Walking Tree on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 5 to 9 p.m., Kilted Mermaid on Friday, Sept. 20 from 6-10 p.m., and Waldo’s on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 1-4 p.m.
