Haiti Partners is having an Open House on Thursday, October 10 from 5 to 7 pm at their new location, 1531 U.S. Highway 1 in the Indian River Plaza (Kmart plaza) in Vero Beach. The event is free and open to the public.


The Pelican Island Preservation Society’s 5th Annual Bird & Nature Art Show will be held at the Sebastian River Art Club Cultural Center, 1245 Main Street in Sebastian. Friday, October 11 is the opening reception from 6 to 8 pm.  The exhibit continues on Saturday (9 am – 5 pm) and Sunday (9 am – 4 pm).  A percentage of the art sales will benefit PIPS and the Sebastian River Art Club.  This year’s event includes a plein air paint-out at the North Sebastian Conservation Area (adjacent to the SRAC), a featured speaker presentation and the popular Sunset Wine and Cheese cruise to Pelican Island on Saturday from 5 to 7 pm. The Sebastian Area Historical Society is hosting a “Family Fun Weekend” at the Sebastian Area Historical Museum, 1235 Main Street Friday (5 – 7 pm) Saturday (9 am – 4 pm) & Sunday (11 am – 4 pm) October 11 through 13.   The collections bring to life the rich heritage of our area including  The Ais Indians’ shells and pottery; objects recovered from Treasure ships;  implements of the farming and fishing industries that were the mainstays of the early economy as well as reminders of the boats on the waterways and the railroad and pioneer family life.  Admission is free.  Call 772 581-1380.

The Oceanside Business Association presents Sunset Saturday Night on October 12 from 6 to 9 pm on Ocean Drive at Humison Park. Listen to music by Collins & Company with snacks and beverages including beer and wine available for purchase. Concert is free.

The  A. E. Backus Museum & Gallery in Fort Pierce is having the opening reception for its annual Best of the Best exhibit featuring multi-talented Florida artists on Saturday, October 12 from 5 to 8 pm. The reception admission is free for Museum members & applicant artists.  The exhibit will be on view through November 15.

The Vero Beach Yacht Club in partnership with the City of Vero Beach and the City Marina is inviting boaters from Vero Beach and surrounding communities to participate in the Blessing of the Fleet October 11 and 12. Clergy will gather at 3 pm October 12 on the City Marina gas dock and bless participating boats as they pass. Custom dictates that passengers on the boats throw flowers into the water and toward the clergy as they pass the dock.  A mandatory Captain’s meeting will be held at the Yacht Club from 5-7 pm on Friday, October 11 with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Participating captains will receive the Blessing itinerary, their order of procession, and a commemorative gift of the City’s Centennial Celebration.  Following the ceremony, all participants are invited to the Yacht Club for a special $15 BBQ with live music. On Sunday, October 13 at 3 pm, the doors at First Presbyterian Church Vero Beach will close and a rare chamber concert will begin, featuring Dutch pianist, Frederic Voorn.  Voorn, who has performed in concert halls on four continents, will present an exciting program of works from Mozart and Chopin.  Sponsored by the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, the chamber program, which also includes several works by Voorn, will feature the acclaimed pianist and composer performing alongside musicians from the orchestra.  His Elegy for Piano and Clarinet will feature principal clarinetist, Jennifer Royals, while SCSO string musicians will perform Voorn’s three-movement String Quartet.  The concert is free, with a suggested donation of $15 to $20. The Pelican Island Audubon Society meeting will be held at the North Indian River County Library in Sebastian on Monday, October 14 at 6 pm.  The presentation is Avian Imagery and Iconography in Prehistoric Florida with Rebecca Harris, Ph.D. of the Smyrnéa Archeological Research Institute.  Free.


Film Studies 1 begins at the Vero Beach Museum of Art on Tuesday, October 15 through November 12.  The program, Thou Shalt Not: Naughty and Nice Films from the Pre-Code Era will be shown with a choice of 1:30 pm or 7 pm each Tuesday.  $80 for Members; $100 for Nonmembers / Register at

Friction Farm

The Friends of the North IRC Library hosts modern folk duo, Friction Farm, in concert combining storytelling, social commentary and humor to create songs of everyday life, local heroes and quirky observations on Tuesday, October 15th at 6 pm at the Library in Sebastian.  Free.  Refreshments will be served.


The Sebastian Area Historical Society is proud to present Sebastian Inlet District – 100 Years of History, with Michelle Malyn, Public Information Associate of the Sebastian Inlet District at the North Indian River County Library, on Wednesday, October 16 at 6 pm.  The Sebastian Inlet was and is a vital part of who we are in Sebastian. Admission is free (donations gratefully accepted) and refreshments will be served.


The Center for Spiritual Care is hosting a workshop titled “It’s Never too Late to Begin Again” with Shotsi LaJoie and Carol Ludwig. Two separate intensive workshops are being offered based on Julia Cameron’s life changing book.  These workshops are particularly relevant to people who are experiencing a big shift in their life.  Tuition for the three-day workshop, including five meals, the workshop text and all materials is $175.  The October workshop will be held Wednesday through Friday, October 16 – 18.  The workshop will repeat on January 8 – 10.  To register, call 772-567-1233 or visit
