Save Sunday, January 26 from 2-4pm!The Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation will host a Grand Re-Opening of the historic house in its new location on Mueller Campus at Indian River State College in Vero Beach. The community is invited to celebrate Laura’s Birthday and tour one of the last original Florida Cracker-style homes that is open to the public. After a brief presentation and recognition for the people involved in making the move of the house possible, there will be an official ribbon-cutting, tours of “Laura’s House” and free cake to celebrate “Laura’s Birthday.
Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation moved the historic home on a 12-mile journey last summer and has been preparing the House to resume public tours in order to provide education and to preserve and maintain the legacy of Laura (Riding) Jackson, an internationally acclaimed author/poet .The Laura (Riding) Jackson house depicts Old Florida and lifestyles in the early 1900’s.
The Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation is delighted to have Indian River State College as its partner. Through the relocation to Mueller Campus, we anticipate the ability to increase our service among school-aged children, including those attending the charter school also located on the campus; college students; and adult learners. In addition to providing tours and workshops, we envision integration with college-level classes on topics such as literature, literacy, environment, history and education, including the opportunity for service learning. We see opportunity for Foundation and College to collaborate on grants to develop new programming, particularly programs that help foster a love of learning, writing, and reading in young children.
LRJF mission is to preserve the historic home of poet and critic Laura (Riding) Jackson. LRJF not only maintains the author’s home but seeks to honor her legacy by creating a center to advance the literary arts in Vero Beach.
LRJ Foundation Writing Center at 1914 14 th Avenue provides a gathering place for writers by offering teen and adult writers workshops, programs like Teens Listen, ongoing weeklywriters groups and community wide events such as an annual Poetry BBQ and monthly “Celebrate a Local Author” during Friday Art Stroll.
