FELLSMERE

Do you remember back in 2013 when Fellsmere became the National Elephant Center? It was founded by a non-profit conservation organization to provide a 225-acre home for retired zoo elephants. The first residents were from Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando. It closed in 2016.
Here is a story from our archival “trunk” that will help jog your memory. If you moved to Indian River County since 2013, you may not know anything about the elephant retirement home back then, so you can add this story to your Elephant Trivia collection and use it the next time you feel safe enough to throw a party.
