news release
Since its inception in 1992, the Samaritan Center has provided shelter for nearly 2,000 Indian River County residents who have found themselves homeless and in need of assistance. More than half of that number includes children whose families are homeless and have no safe place to sleep. Catholic Charities Samaritan Center has long been the key to helping these families find a way out of their desperate situation, offering hope, hospitality, and a hand up in a time of need. Samaritan Center is a multi-level, comprehensive homeless program coordinated through Catholic Charities of the Diocese of the Palm Beaches and benefits all individuals in Indian River County, regardless of their religious persuasion. Each year for the past 15 years, in order to raise much-needed funds to help continue their mission, the Samaritan Center hosts the Bernard and Betty Egan Memorial Golf Classic.
The Dyer Difference Award Committee chose to recognize the Samaritan Center and its work battling homelessness as the recipient of the March Dyer Difference Award in Indian River County.
The Dyer Difference Award is all about celebrating the beauty and kindness in our midst. For the Dyer family and the members of the Dyer staff, the award and the $6,000 in donations made monthly between the St. Lucie and Indian River Counties are all about helping to make a positive difference in the community. For the recipients, it’s an acknowledgement of their tireless efforts to do the same and a much-needed financial boost to help further their missions.
