Alert Indian River
Indian River County’s (IRC) Public Works Department announced today that 43rd Avenue between 26th Street/Aviation Blvd and State Route 60 (SR 60) will be closed for major roadway reconstruction and improvements starting June 15, 2021.
This entire project includes the reconstruction and widening of the intersection of SR 60 and 43rd Avenue including: widening of the bridge over the Main Relief Canal on 43rd Avenue, drainage improvements, sidewalks, traffic and pedestrian signals, and roadway lighting.
During the closure of 43rd Avenue between SR 60 and 26th Street, the contractor will reconstruct and widen the existing 43rd roadway to four lanes, including a median section, curb and gutter and seven drainage crossings. The roadway must be closed to facilitate this work due to the alignment changes and number of roadway drainage crossings. It is estimated that the contractor will need approximately 12-weeks to complete this work and the road should reopen prior to Labor Day Weekend.
Access will be maintained for businesses at the northeast corner of the intersection and property owners within the closed section of 43rd Avenue will continue to have access using 44th Avenue.
Traffic will be diverted to 58th Avenue and 27th Avenue. Travelers driving north on 43rd Avenue will have to divert either east or west onto SR 60, then turn to the north on either 27th Avenue or 58th Avenue and use 26th Street to return to 43rd Avenue. Travelers driving south on 43rd Avenue will have to divert east or west onto 26th Street, then turn to south on either 27th Avenue or 58th Avenue and use SR 60 to return to 43rd Ave. Attached is a copy of the detour route.
This is the first of two planned road closures of 43rd Avenue necessary to complete the project. The second closure will be on 43rd Avenue between 16th Street and SR 60 and is not scheduled to occur until after the first closure has been completed. The County will provide advance notice of the second road closure at 43rd Avenue, as well as updates on road closures on the IRC website at www.ircgov.com and other social media platforms as they become available.
