Meet multimedia artist James Prosek and help him create a special community canvas at the opening-day celebration of the exhibition James Prosek: At Work,Saturday, July 11, at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA). Admission is free all day as part of the Museum’s Second Saturday programming, featuring exhibition-inspired activities for the entire family to enjoy.
Activity highlights:
- Beginning at 10 a.m., help James Prosek paint a large-scale work inspired by the flora and fauna of the Indian River Lagoon. Drawing from Prosek’s deep engagement with the natural world, participants will help celebrate the beauty and biodiversity of our local ecosystem by contributing to this shared artwork.
- Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., head to VBMA’s education wing with the kids to participate in the Museum Studios family programming. Explore Colorful Creatures with a fun art project inspired by the nature-themed exhibition.
- Be among the first to view the exhibition James Prosek: At Work, a survey of more than 70 artworks that highlights Prosek’s range of practice, from on-site field studies to studio-based painting, watercolor, and sculpture. Docents, stationed throughout the exhibition, will orient visitors, provide mini-tours, and answer questions.
James Prosek: At Work highlights the major projects that have shaped the artist’s first three decades of practice—a diverse body of work made since the early 2000s. This is Prosek’s second show at VBMA. More than a decade ago, in 2015, the Museum presented selections from his celebrated Ocean Fishes series, including highly detailed paintings on paper depicting species such as the Atlantic Bonito and King Mackerel.
James Prosek: At Work was organized by the Morris Museum, Morristown, New Jersey, and features new interpretive texts authored by the Vero Beach Museum of Art. Support of this exhibit is provided by Barry and Jennifer Jaruzelski and the Martin Guitar Charitable Foundation.
