The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra explores magic and myth during Landscapes & Legends on Sunday, August 16 at 3:00 PM.

The concert at the Community Church of Vero Beach, 1901 23rd Street, opens with Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, famously depicted in Disney’s Fantasia. Guest conducted by Brevard music educator Patrick Phillips, the vivid, 11-minute orchestral tone poem musically narrates a tale of magic gone wrong. The world premiere performance of Kenneth Fuchs’ Cloud Slant shifts the focus inward, capturing light, motion and atmosphere. A Fuchs album recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra for Naxos won the 2018 GRAMMY Award for Best Classical Compendium. 

Landscapes & Legends continues when Vero Beach music and arts leader, Dr. Jacob Craig joins the orchestra for Edward MacDowell’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a deeply romantic and expressive work in three-movements. Composed in 1885, the work has the distinction of being the first major piano concerto written by an American. Renowned pianist, Van Cliburn chose MacDowell’s Piano Concerto No. 2 at age 18 for his professional orchestral debut. Landscapes & Legends concludes with Pines of Rome, the world famous 1924 orchestral tone poem by Italian composer, Ottorino Respighi. Lasting about 22 minutes, it dramatically depicts four different locations around Rome framed by iconic pine trees. Ancient streets, distant echoes, and the sound of a nightingale are sculpted into one of the greatest works of the orchestral repertoire. $35 tickets for Landscapes & Legends are available through the orchestra website at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org or at Marine Bank & Trust branches.
