Historical Society seeks volunteers to help bring local history to life

The Indian River County Historical Society is seeking volunteers to help with upcoming events and to share the community’s history with residents and visitors.

Volunteers are an important part of the Historical Society’s ability to offer special events, exhibits and educational programs throughout the year. From greeting visitors and assisting with event activities to helping with setup, hospitality and other event needs, there are many ways volunteers can make a difference.

“My wife and I moved here three years ago from Colorado. We became active with the Historical Society and were introduced to the history of our new community. It was a fantastic way for us to make new friends and integrate into the community,” said Kent Tamsen, Historical Society Vice President.

The Society is especially looking for volunteers to assist with the fall Pineapple Festival, one of the community’s popular annual celebrations. Volunteers are needed now to help in planning and implementation, and at the festival to welcome guests, provide information and assist with activities that showcase Indian River County’s rich agricultural and cultural heritage.

The Historical Society is also seeking docents to help at the Train Station Exhibit Center and Hallstrom House. Docents greet visitors, provide information about the historic sites and exhibits, and help guests better understand the people, places, and events that shaped Indian River County. Training is available.

“You don’t have to be a historian to volunteer,” said Tamsen. “If you enjoy meeting people, learning about our community and helping preserve local history, there is a place for you. Our volunteers make it possible for us to open our doors, host events while sharing our local heritage with the public.”

Volunteer opportunities are flexible. The Indian River County Historical Society invites anyone interested in volunteering to join us in preserving and sharing our community’s history.Interested? Contact kent_tamsen@yahoo.com for additional information.
