The Vero BeachYacht Club will hold its annual Blessing of the Fleet on Saturday December 9, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The ceremony is open to all boaters in Indian River and surrounding counties.
The Blessing, which the Yacht Club started in 1984 but which originated centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing villages, seeks to ensure a safe boating season. Tradition calls for guests on board to cast flowers into the water as their boat passes the clergy on the VBYC main dock.
After the blessing, boaters should continue north past the City Marina before turning around to return to the Intracoastal Waterway.
Interested boaters should register their boat names with the Club beforehand at 772-231-2211, so they can be announced as they pass by.
VBYC’s signal boat will begin coordinating the boat lineup at 3 p.m. on VHF Channel 72. Captains should bring their boats to the meeting point just north of the Barber Bridge between ICW markers 137 and 139.
VBYC is located at 3601 Rio Vista Blvd. (next to the City Marina). More information is available on www.verobeachyachtclub.com.
