Plan to lease Riverhouse sparks lively Facebook comment stream

City Charter provisions exist to prevent the lease of lands and buildings in Riverside and MacWilliam Parks for commercial use without voter approval. Despite these provisions, City Councilman val Zudans is pushing to lease the Riverhouse in MacWilliam Park to a brewery. Currently, the Rivershouse is used by local organizations for special events, and is a popular site wedding, receptions and other special events.
Editor’s note: The following Facebook comment stream is in response to an Indian River Guardian story reporting on plans by the City Council to explore leasing the Riverhouse in MacWilliam Park to Orchid Island Brewery.

Kristopher Cousino Same kind of person who would insist on a power sale regardless of the monetary outcome is the same kind of folk who will also sell off other city assets. You’ve sold our soul to the devil. Good luck getting a refund before we’re all in “Hell.”

Marc Snediker
Marc Snediker Micro breweries are usually good pieces in city redevelopment puzzles. But that’s because they can take difficult, underutilized real estate and create a destination in places where vacancies are the norm. They are not nearly as good when they are displacing useful public assets. This is a dumb idea.

Renée Ann Martinson This is a horrible idea. We really don’t need another drinking establishment, we don’t need the noise & traffic this would create, we don’t need this beautiful little area turned into something commercial that would benefit the owners more than it would benefit the citizens of Vero Beach! NO

Can’t anyone design a venue where live music is the focus rather than background noise to food & microdrafts?

Chris Gauthier
Chris Gauthier Bad idea for many reasons the biggest problem I see would be just the parking alone you have a ballfield you have a dog park and then you have the boat ramp it’s hard enough to park a boat and trailer over there now as it is never mind the other list of problems

Adam Brobst I recall that a part of said park is now fenced off and private, a bunch of kayaks sitting around. This happened at another park I’ve gone to since I was a teenager(south county). Where we’d play football and hit golf balls is now privately owned. NoneSee More

  1. Question: Is it legal to have alcoholic beverages in a public park? Either way putting a business in this park is a bad idea. Do I smell recall election in the air?
