The Cultural Council’s Art in Public Places is showing selected works by Artist Registry Members on a rotating basis throughout the year at the Indian River County Administration Buildings at 1801 27th Street, Vero Beach. In addition, a new exhibit of Landscapes, Seascapes and Florals by Rita Bianco Sprague is on view at the Indian River County Courthouse through May 9. Hours for both venues are Monday – Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.

Derek Gores will be creating a mural on 14th Avenue (in the alley between the tire company and Southern Social…it will be seen from 14th Avenue). He is working on Thursday February 21 and will continue until he finishes on Friday the 22. Gallery 14 will be having an Open House, with Derek in attendance, on Thursday February 21st from 5-7pm. People will be able to watch Derek create the mural and then come to the Gallery (right down the street a bit) to see his extensive number of collages on display and speak with him about his work and about the mural. This is an exciting event for the Arts District…the mural is sure to be spectacular.

The Garden Club of Indian River County, will dedicate the first Blue Star Memorial Marker to be installed on Friday, February 22 at 2:00 pm at the northeast corner of City Hall. The marker’s name commemorates the blue star in the center of the red and white service flags first used during World War I which were placed in the windows or on the front of homes to denote a family member was serving in the military abroad.

The Ride Poverty Out of Town & Splash Party will be held on Saturday, February 23 beginning at 8 am at South Beach Park in Vero Beach to benefit United Against Poverty of Indian River County. This is a cycling tour of the iconic Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway. Participants may choose a route of either 40 miles or a full century (100 miles). This community-based event is planned in conjunction with the year-long celebration of the Vero Beach Centennial. Following the ride, there will be a Splash Party at Waldo’s in Vero Beach at 4 pm. The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra will celebrate a decade of music-making with a Ten Year Anniversary Gala concert at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 24 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2365 Pine Avenue in Vero Beach. The performance opens with Christopher Marshall’s Aue! (World Premiere) followed by Hindemith’s masterpiece from 1943, Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber. The concert closes with Belgian-French composer, Cesar Franck’s Symphony in D minor.
