The Phoenix Jazz Orchestra is a smokin’ hot 18-piece Big Band– in town for a tribute concert to Jazz legend, Stan Kenton. Hosted by the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, the Phoenix Jazz Orchestra will celebrate the music and career of the famed band leader with A Jazz Tribute to Stan Kenton at 3:00 PM on Sunday, April 7 at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, 1707 16th Street. Kenton’s orchestra, during the late 1940s and early 1950s, was the biggest jazz attraction in the world, embracing in its ranks many soloists and arrangers who went on to have brilliant careers of their own. For almost four decades, Kenton led one of the most dynamic and progressive jazz orchestras of the post-war years. One of the most creative of all bandleaders, Kenton’s penchant for complex and highly structured work could run counter to the expectations of critics and audiences alike. Selections will include “Eager Beaver,” “Over the Rainbow,” “All About Ronnie,” “Rhapsody in Blue,” “Opus in Pastels,” “Zoot,” “The Thrill is Gone,” “Body and Soul,” “La Suerte de los Tontos,” and many more. Guest conductor John Mason will lead the world-class Phoenix Jazz Orchestra for this Central Florida tribute. The Orlando-based Phoenix Jazz Orchestra takes its name from the mythical bird and not from the capital of Arizona. $25 advance tickets for adults are available through the orchestra website atwww.SpaceCoastSymphony.org or at the orchestra’s official ticket outlet, Marine Bank & Trust, beachside and mainland branches. Tickets at the door are $30. A Jazz Tribute to Stan Kenton is free for those aged 18 and under or with a student ID.
