The Indian River Symphonic Association (IRSA) has announced an exciting expansion of its ongoing commitment to local music education. This year, a portion of the IRSA Scholarship Program funds will directly support two immersive workshops featuring world-renowned musicians for orchestra students at Vero Beach High School.
By bringing exceptional professional artists directly into the classroom, IRSA is broadening the reach of its scholarship funding. This investment allows donor support to enrich an entire ensemble of young musicians.
The upcoming educational workshop series includes:
- Biribá Union (November 19): Featuring Grammy-winning cellist/vocalist Mike Block, Grammy-nominated guitarist/songwriter Christylez Bacon, and Uruguayan bassist/composer Patricia Ligia. The trio blends classical string techniques with Brazilian rhythms, jazz, American roots, and improvisation. Students will learn how foundational orchestral skills translate into cross-genre collaboration and composition.
- Balla Kouyaté & Mike Block (January 24): Featuring NEA National Heritage Fellow and balafon master Balla Kouyaté alongside cellist Mike Block. Together, they explore the intersection of West African musical traditions, American folk, and classical technique. Students will gain direct access to artists whose careers demonstrate how world music traditions interact while retaining their unique cultural heritage.
These guest educational opportunities offer Vero Beach High School students hands-on instruction, exposure to diverse global traditions outside their standard curriculum, and a firsthand look at the possibilities of advanced musical study.
