The Pelican Island Audubon Society is giving away free oak trees to any resident who asks for one, but with some conditions – they agree to learn how to take care of their tree and they agree to let PIAS put it on a map so they can do a follow-up visit.  Free oak trees along with the demonstration planting and care of the tree instructions will be at Audubon House, 195 Oslo Road in Vero Beach on the following dates:  Sunday, October 6 from 10 am to  2 pm; Friday, October 11 at 5 pm (followed by a talk with Matt Hill who is working to reforest Madagascar with local farmers  along with a film and refreshments) and Sunday, October 13 between 10 am and 2 pm.

The Indian River Genealogical Society is offering Introduction to Genealogy classes at the North Indian River County Library on Saturdays October 5 & 19 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Learn to record and organize your facts, how to search for additional information and how to find and use the internet and library resources.



Vero Heritage, Inc.  presents An Evening in Paris on Thursday,  October 3 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm at the Heritage Center.  This fundraiser is inspired by beautifully manicured Parisian gardens & French orangeries of yesteryear.  Enjoy French wines & foods; Local Vendors’ Market; Live Jazz by James Broxton & the Essence of Sound Band; Fashion Show by The Parisian Hostess; Human Topiary by Power Entertainment Productions and French Jardin by Potted Garden & Design.  Tickets are $30 in advance, $40 at the door.  Call 772-770-2263.

Catch a pair of terrific free movies at 1:30 pm on Thursday, October 3 at the North Indian River County Library in Sebastian. The first short film is The Curse of Micah Rood featuring Joe Gramm, The Movie Man in a small role. The second full-length feature is The Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The First Friday Gallery Stroll will be held on Friday, October 4 from 5 to 8 pm along and around 14th Avenue in Downtown Vero Beach.  Gallery 14 presents What Happens Next! A Group Show curated show by Derek Gores featuring sculptor Cliffton Chandler, mixed media artist David Burton, jewelry designer, Julie Shaw and collage artist Derek Gores.  There will be an opening reception on Thursday October 3rd from 5 – 8 pm as well as the Gallery Stroll on Friday.  New! Raw Space Gallery presents a collection of works by Venezuelan Master Painter, Luis Alberto Hernandez  titled Timeless with an additional reception on Saturday from 6 to 9 pm.  Main Street Vero Beach’s guest artist is  landscape painter, Buddy Brown.

As the first Polkadot in her Square school, Lily faces an almost impossible task of fitting in. The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra String Quartet will perform a special concert for children on Saturday, October 5 at 10:00 am at McKee Botanical Garden. The Quartet will bring several classic Aesop’s Fables to life as they kick off their Once Upon an Orchestra series!  Children will hear the exciting tales of The Tortoise and the Hare, The Fox and The Billy Goat, The Mouse and the Lion, and The Mule, all while learning about the instruments of the string family.  Following this special program, children will have a chance to try out the instruments of the string section, act out their favorite characters, pose as a musician in the symphonic photo booth, and color in their very own Once Upon an Orchestra coloring book!  This event is included with general admission to the Garden ($12 Adults, $11 Seniors and $8 Children).

Sunrise Rotary Vero Beach is hosting a fundraiser, Oktoberfest for Polio Plus, on Saturday, October 5 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Riverhouse, 305 Acacia Drive in Vero Beach.  Enjoy German food, and bid on auction items to raise money for Polio Plus which the Gates Foundation matches. $25 per person.


The  Treasure Coast Pilot Club’s 32nd Annual Autumn in the Park will be held at Riverside Park on Saturday & Sunday, October 5 & 6 from 9 am to 4 pm each day.  Visit a wide variety of crafters’ booths, a food court and more!



The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra will perform Big Band Fever, a concert featuring music of the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s on Sunday, October 6 at 7 pm at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center.  Central Florida’s finest jazz musicians will perform selections from the legendary band leaders Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington and others. Selections include In The Mood, Sing Sing Sing, Getting Sentimental Over You, Take the A Train, Stardust, and many more! To add to the excitement, four Arthur Murray dancers will perform dance numbers to the music of the 1940’s.  $25 advance tickets for adults are available through the orchestra website at or $30 at the door.
