New online Art Appreciation Series at the VBMA


This fall join VBMA Senior Curator Anke Van Wagenberg in a series of expansive dialogues on the ways art is defined and understood throughout time. Enjoy listening and learning through a series of online classes drawing on highlights from the VBMA’s permanent collection and masterpieces of art history. All classes will be online with content brought to participants through thematic power point presentations offered via Zoom. Each session will include the opportunity for questions and further dialogue. Classes are on Fridays at 11:30 am – 12:30 pm and begin October 9 through October 30, 2020.

October 9: Categorizing Art Delve into the varied forms art can take, with Christo and Jeanne-Claude as a case study.

October 16: Basics of Art History Learn about the interpretive tools of the trade: form, content, iconography, and style.

October 23: Valuing Art Explore the value of art beyond monetary value, from intrinsic to patriotic.

October 30: Form MattersInvestigate the qualities of line, space, perspective, and color, drawing on Alexander Calder as a prime example.
