The Source’s Dignity Food Truck team, with their newest wing recipe entitled “Mo Wings,” won first place out of 22 other food establishments who entered the “Space Coast Wing Battle” held at Wickham Park in Melbourne, FL on May 21st. The third annual fundraiser was sponsored by The Children’s Hunger Project of Cocoa, FL in partnership with Battle Bros LLC and had over 1,500 attendees to the exciting event. At the second annual event, and the first time participating, the Dignity Food Truck won third place with their Thai Chili wings out of 31 vendors. The handmade wings were created in remembrance of Maureen Archer, the former Assistant Executive Director of The Source who passed away earlier in the year.
The goal of The Children’s Hunger Project is to ensure elementary school children, at least on weekends, will have basic nutrition. Every Friday, the non-profit helps as many elementary school children as possible have food to carry home in their backpack for the weekend. Food items include canned ravioli or rice with chicken and vegetables, milk, juice boxes, breakfast bars, cereal, and other non-perishable food items. This kid-friendly food is lightweight and easy for kids to handle – no cooking is required. Even if the power is out the kids can still pull the top of the can and eat Beanie Weenies. On Monday, the kids return to school with a better and healthier foundation for learning.
A $50 event ticket bought patrons all the wings they could eat, free drinks, live music all night long and a game area. The judging was based on a blind taste-test and the winners were announced at the end of the evening.
The Source offers the Dining with Dignity Program to their homeless members, which includes a six, 12 and 18-week professional training program, ultimately helping them find suitable employment within the food industry. At the same time, they are cooking meals for in-house members, local businesses and non-profit organizations. The Dignity Food Truck is a social enterprise geared to selling award-winning foods throughout the community while providing additional training for culinary students.
