Visiting Nurse Association of the Treasure Coast has honored Co-Founder Ann Marie McCrystal by dedicating the road leading to VNA Hospice House as Ann Marie McCrystal Way, recognizing her more than five decades of service to the VNA and the Vero Beach community. now is the timne for all good men tocome to the aid of their country.

More than 50 years ago, McCrystal joined a group of community volunteers who recognized the need for a local healthcare agency. Along with Marion Oechsner, Celeta Arden, Helen Brackins, George Kuhn, Pat Moore, Barbara Morrison, Ted Chenault, and William Terry, she helped establish the Visiting Nurse Association of the Treasure Coast with a mission of providing compassionate care to patients and families throughout Indian River County, regardless of their ability to pay.

A trained operating room nurse, McCrystal brought her clinical experience and passion for serving others to the organization’s early years. She has remained actively involved with the VNA, continuing to serve as a board member for both the VNA of the Treasure Coast and the VNA & Hospice Foundation.

“The naming of the street Ann Marie McCrystal Way was the perfect way to pay tribute and honor Ann Marie for her many years of service, not only to the VNA, but to the Vero Beach community,” said Carol Kanarek, VNA board member. “She served on the Indian River County Hospital District Board for many years, looking out for the VNA and improving healthcare in Indian River County. She is our champion!”

The street’s location carries special meaning. Those traveling along 37th Street will also see Hugh McCrystal Drive, named in honor of Ann Marie’s husband, Dr. Hugh McCrystal, for his contributions to local healthcare. Now, the two roads recognize the McCrystals’ shared commitment to healthcare in the local community.

The dedication ceremony this past April brought together Ann Marie’s family, friends, physicians, community partners, donors, and others who have been a part of the journey. Today, the Ann Marie McCrystal Way sign stands as a lasting tribute to her leadership, service, and role in the VNA’s history.
