The Indian River County Board of County Commissioners has proclaimed October 4 through 10, 2026, as Fire Prevention Week, encouraging residents to practice safe charging habits and reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.

This year’s National Fire Protection Association Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on the everyday devices that power modern life. Lithium-ion batteries are found in smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, e-scooters, and toys. While these batteries generally operate safely, they can overheat, catch fire, or explode when damaged, misused, or improperly charged.

Indian River County Fire Rescue has seen an uptick in calls involving lithium-ion batteries, reinforcing the need for residents to take simple precautions at home.

“Lithium-ion batteries are in nearly every home today, and most people do not think twice about charging them,” said Fire Marshal Richard Marini. “Use the charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer, charge on a hard and flat surface, and stop using a battery or device that is damaged, swollen or unusually hot.”

Residents are also encouraged to unplug devices once fully charged and to charge larger devices, including e-bikes and e-scooters, outside and away from doors and exits. Devices should never be charged on beds, couches, or other soft surfaces where heat can build up.

“Safe disposal is just as important as safe charging,” said Dave Johnson, Indian River County Emergency Services Director. “Lithium-ion batteries should never be placed in household garbage or curbside recycling bins. Improper disposal can create fire risks for collection crews, waste facilities and the public.”

Indian River County residents may drop off used batteries at any of the County’s five Customer Convenience Centers or at the Main County Landfill.
