The Vero Beach Museum of Art is currently exhibiting significant examples of Deborah Butterfield’s (at left) distinctive sculpture based on the equine form in the exhibition Deborah Butterfield: Horses continuing through Sunday, June 4. View 16 unique sculptures in the exhibition Larry Kagan: Object/Shadow, (at right) on view through Sunday, May 21. Digital montages by photographer Jeffery Becton, The View Out His Window (and in his mind’s eye) continues through May 7.

 

SATURDAY MAY 6

The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra presents a Pops Concert, Mothers Day Bouquet, on Saturday, May 6 at 7 pm at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center. Space Coast Symphony will perform popular favorites, including selections from Leroy Anderson, John Phillip Sousa, Richard Rodgers, Brahms, Mozart, John Williams, Ellington, Gershwin, and others. The program will also feature the 2016 Concerto Competition winner, Alyssa Barry on clarinet. For tickets, visit spacecoastsymphony.org.

Sebastian Inlet State Park’s Night Sounds Concert Series presents Ring of Fire on Saturday, May 6 from 7 to 9 pm. The Ring of Fire band is a seven piece band with a legendary Nashville sparkle of family-oriented music. The concert is free with regular park entry fees.

 

The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVB) invites members of the community and their companion animals to the annual Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, May 6 at 10:00 am. During this non-denominational event, animals in attendance will be blessed. Members of the community without pets are also welcome.

Arts & Culture in St. Lucie County

The Backus Museum, 500 Indian River Drive in Fort Pierce is holding a panel discussion with a Q & A following titled “What makes a winning entry?” on Saturday, May 6 from 3 to 5 pm, just prior to the jurying of the annual photography show in June. Panel members are Kathleen Fredrick (director), George Love (presentation), Janie Hinkel (show sponsor) and Michael Enns (juror). The cost is $10 for artists, $5 for Museum members and Free to those who applied for the “Best of the Best” show. RSVP by calling 772-465-0630.

Unity Spiritual Center, 950 43rd Avenue in Vero Beach, is holding Worldwide Labyrinth Walk Day and Beautification Day in the butterfly garden on Saturday, May 6. Join them for weeding, planting, fertilizing, watering, mulching and general cleanup. All materials supplied. 9 to 11 am. Sign up in the lobby.

SUNDAY, MAY 7

The Indian River Medical Center Foundation is hosting the May Pops 2017 on Sunday, May 7. Held on Windsor’s polo field, the concert, featuring the Brevard Symphony Orchestra and Broadway soloists Rachel York and Ryan Silverman, starts at 5:30 p.m. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. for early picnicking. The Cultural Council of Indian River County is holding its 2017 Laurel Awards Celebration to honor all the previous Laurel Award recipients of the first 20 years on Thursday, May 18 at Riverside Theatre. Awards were given in a wide array of categories that included cultural leadership roles in business, education, philanthropy and volunteerism, as well as an award that recognized a local artist of their field. Enjoy a very special cocktail reception followed by a stage performance in the Stark Theatre. The Pelican Island Audubon Society’s meeting will be held on Monday, May 8 at the North Indian River County Library. The topic is Hummingbird Habitat with Lavon Silvernell. The meeting begins at 6 pm. Free.
