What do you expect from the new Vero Beach Council? Please attend on Tuesday!

Former VB Mayor Richard Winger.

COMMENTARY

RICHARD WINGER

Editor’s note: Richard Winger was elected to City Council three times and also served as Mayor.

The new City Council meets to select a mayor Monday at 10:00 AM.  Since it is the mayor who runs City Council meetings, this selection will tell us a lot about whether we will have congenial and concise business meetings or a continuation of the contentious and endless meetings that have prevailed since November 2017.   We certainly don’t need Washington, D.C.’s drama in our town!

The City Council meeting this Tuesday at 5:00 PM has many important issues which will set the tone and direction of this Council and decide some important issues.

3G will occur early in the meeting.  It is critical for those of us who love both our parks and dogs.

Under 4A, New Business, there are four issues which may be “much ado about nothing,” or very important.  They are:

1.  A STRATEGY DISCUSSION OF VARIOUS TOPICS… SUCH AS PROPERTY SALES AND LEASES….
We want our parks.  Is this a commitment to that end, or a path to divestiture?

2.  MEASURES TO PREVENT BOTCHED NEGOTIATIONS.
This does not seem useful and may be a continuation of contentiousness.

3.  A PROTOCOL FOR CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS.
Why this is needed after 100 years puzzles me.

4.  A NAME FOR THE PROPERTY WHERE THE UTILITY PLANTS WILL BE REMOVED.
This is a good idea.  Good potential names are to be discussed.

Lastly, under 8B, is the authorization to have professionals’ study and recommend improvements to Beachside parking.   This is certainly a good idea and needs to be approved.
